Anthony Idmalk  [ October, 2013 ]
Anthony Idmalk

Anthony Idmalk was born in Benguerir, Morocco in 1980. He immigrated to the United States in 2004 to New York. His passion is painting, but he also is very interested in the art of music. He has exhibited his art in the Chelsea area of New York and has worked at the New York Metropolitan Museum. His art is influenced by his Moroccan culture and many artists he has been introduced to since he began painting at the age of 7.

Moving between watercolor and oil paints as he does, it’s often difficult for a viewer to tell the two apart because Idmalk’s style of application and color palette are very bright, smooth, sun-splashed and vibrant. His work focuses on rural scenes and still life, with recent canvases baring traces of the Old Masters he studied at the Metropolitan Museum, while the incredible, razor-sharp crispness of each image, the tactile quality of the light.

This blending of influences and styles gives Idmalk’s paintings an exciting edge, evoking the impression of glimpsing snapshots of an entirely new, but not unfamiliar world. Every surface seems pristine and unscathed, even the worn hulls of romantic boats beam with an uncanny new vigor. This intense feeling of pictorial purity pushes Idmalk’s compositions past realism into a kind of sparkling impressionism that is completely mesmerizing.

Anthony recently participated in the Moroccan Talent Expo held in Washington, DC where he was selected as one of the top 5 artists. Anthony's favorite artists are Salvador Dali, Magritt, Hagler and Vic Muniz. The surrealism of their art is what influences me as a painter.
