Paint the town Moroccan

Lecture: On Friday, May 4, 4 pm, as part of First Friday and the Paint the
Town Moroccan event, the Museum is hosting a lecture, Morocco: America’s
Oldest Friend <http://friendsofmorocco.org/lectures.html> , by Former US
Ambassador to Morocco, Ed Gabriel. Gabriel will share some little known
history between the US and Morocco, including Morocco being the first to
recognize the USA as a country. Learn fascinating facts about Morocco’s role
in protecting the Jewish population during WWII, protecting women’s rights
in the Arab world, and setting the pace for fashion, food and décor in the
past decade.
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the Academy Art
Museum will host its annual Paint the Town fundraiser for Academy Art Museum
in Easton, MD. This year’s theme, PAINT THE TOWN MOROCCAN! Promises an
exotic adventure to the Kingdom of Morocco. The day begins at souk with the
enchanting music of the five key regions of Morocco, a Moroccan flag
ceremony and more.

Step into Marrakesh, as the Museum brings a Souk to Harrison Street in
Easton, near the Museum, on Saturday, May 5, from noon to 6 p.m. (free
admission). We reserved the hall block of South Street, Easton, MD
In-between Academy Art museum and the Historical Avalon Theater.

You will experience:
An authentic Moroccan souk with a decorative and exotic Nomad Tent and
bargaining opportunities. Dramatic staged performances of traditional
Moroccan music and a fashion show, fascinating for the shopper and
non-shopper alike. Come and experience the bargaining process while shopping
for goods over a cup of mint tea and Moroccan pastries.

Souks and markets are a major feature in Moroccan life, and are among the
country’s greatest attractions. Each major city and town in Morocco has a
special souk quarter. Villages in the countryside also have local souks
which are usually held one day each week in an open field or outside the
towns’ Kasbah walls.

Large cities like Marrakesh and Fes have labyrinths of individual souks. The
cities of Marrakesh, Fes and Ouarzazate are famous for their beautiful souks
- which are Morocco’s widespread and huge shopping centers. Some of the best
buys in Morocco are leather ware, handicrafts, carpets, pottery, jewelry,
wood carvings, traditional dress (djellabas) and various food products, such
as olives, olive oil, Moroccan Species, and pastries.

Some of the most sought-after items in Moroccan souks and markets are
Moroccan carpets, blankets, and rugs. All are hand crafted in traditional
Moroccan style, with authentic materials and craftsmanship passed down the
generations.

in the Spitaleri Gallery and Atrium Gallery will feature the artwork of
contemporary visual artist Hamid Kachmar, as well as Moroccan artwork on
loan from The World Bank Art Program and contemporary photography by
Moroccan artist Lalla Essaydi, on loan from the International Finance
Corporation.

adventure awaits those who "travel" to the Kingdom of Morocco for this
Fundraiser evening. The evening begins with enchanting music of the five key

40 E. Dover Street, Easton, followed by Moroccan appetizers and drinks at
the Academy Art Museum <http://www.academyartmuseum.org/> , 106 South
Street, Easton. A seated dinner with authentic Moroccan cuisine served under
the tent. Honorary Chairpersons are the Former US Ambassador to Morocco, Ed
Gabriel and his wife, Kathleen Linehan. Admission charge $195 per person

Last year’s event, PAINT THE TOWN CUBAN! raised over $93,000 to support the
Academy Art Museum’s mission to enhance cultural life on the Eastern Shore
by making available to everyone the Museum’s expanding art collection,
exhibitions, and broad spectrum of arts programs for dance, painting, music
and more. The Museum’s Art Reachprogram reaches out to schools and community
groups to offer meaningful field trips in conjunction with its exhibitions,
while its Art to Go program addresses the needs of underserved populations
on the Mid-Shore.
