Safaa Nhairy  [ March, 2004 ]
Safaa Nhairy

Fresh, young and novel, Safaa Nhairy represents the new generation of Moroccans seeking positive change and intellectual development.  Her writings describe perfectly Safaa Nhairy and her personality.  She is a young woman who defends strongly her viewpoints and presents brilliant arguments to them.  Her column, in her website www.safaanhairy.com, is a total success.  People read her ideas and thoughts all over the world.  Not only they are exposed to a new way of thinking, but have the opportunity to react to her articles by writing commentaries that get published in her website.

Safaa Nhairy knows what topics to pick and to discuss.  They are themes that touch, concern and worry her.  Her readership admires her for her “audacity;” she tackles topics that most people prefer to ignore.  Her last column on her website was about the importance of one to think for him/herself, and not let any outside power influence one’s thinking.  She believes in what she calls a “personal reasoning.”

Although Nhairy lives in the Washington DC area, she keeps in touch with her country.  She writes regular columns in the daily newspaper “Liberation.”  She discusses the American/Moroccan political and social issues.

Currently, she writes for a local newspaper in Virginia.  She talks about the situation of the Muslim in the USA, foreign students’ lives in this country and problems of gender in a male-dominated society.

Safaa Nhairy’s resume is very impressive.  Few months ago, she had an experience at the Voice of America, a governmental TV and radio station in Washington, DC.  Nhairy describes it as “interesting,” but thinks that she cannot work in a propaganda world.  She also worked in the Publications department of the Middle East Institute, in Washington, DC.

Safaa Nhairy is known to milliers of Moroccans.  At age 13, she used to host a TV show on the second national channel 2M.  She also used to publish her own newspaper for her peers. At 17, she realized her dream: a magazine for the Moroccan youth.  Due to many financial issues, the magazine couldn’t survive.  Nhairy also worked for the newspaper “Le Quotidien du Maroc,” “Essahra”and “Le Matin du Sahara.”  Today, she is perfectly trilingual.

Very active in her life, she believes that everyone on earth has a duty and that one should work hard to fulfill his/her mission. She now pursues a degree in Communication at a university in Virginia.  She had been solicited, many times, to represent the voice of the Moroccan youth in Europe and in the states.  Her plans for 2003: keep up with the website, the columns in “Liberation” and “Broadside,” the Virginia paper.  She also has a project with a radio station in Belgium.

Despite her busy schedule, Nhairy finds time to do what she loves the most: reading.  She also take any opportunity to travel and visit new sites.  In her spare time, Nhairy likes to draw and paint.
