Yasmin Belkhyr   [ December, 2013 ]
Yasmin Belkhyr

Yasmin Belkhyr was born in Salet, Morocco and was raised in Queens, NY. She has written about the children of Morocco too many times to count. When writing, she remembers whose blood runs in her body, which country called her their child first. She has found herself through her writing, as she strives to attain all the women of Salet could not, so that one day, maybe she could help change that.

She has received four Gold Medals and two Silver Medals from the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a merit award in poetry and an honorable mention award in short story from the YoungArts Foundation, second place in the Princeton University Poetry Prize, semi-finalist and finalist in the Norman Mailer Awards, third place in the Sierra Nevada Poetry Competition, first place in the Hamline University Short Story Competition. She was also named a finalist for the National Student Poets Program, a finalist for the Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing Contest and was named a Young Poet of the Year by the Poetry Society of England in their Foyle's Young Poets Competition. She most recently won an all expense paid trip to Miami from the YoungArts Foundation for winning first place in their poetry competition.

She has been published in magazines such as the Adroit Journal, Keep This Bag Away From Children, and Thistle Magazine, among others.  She has read poetry and performed at the Casita Maria Center in the Bronx, Two Moon Art House and Cafe in Brooklyn, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and the acclaimed Lincoln Center in Manhattan. When not writing, she acts as Editor-in-Chief of Winter Tangerine Review, the literary journal she founded this past March, which has received more than two thousands submissions to date, and has been nationally and internationally distributed.
